Cambridge IGCSE was created more than 30 years ago. Today, it’s the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. Not only is it truly international - it gives students more options than any other international qualification. That means more subjects to choose from, more ways to learn, and more ways to succeed. The Cambridge IGCSE curriculum offers a variety of routes for learners with a wide range of abilities, including those whose first language is not English. We align the standards of Cambridge IGCSE with the GCSE qualification taken in England.
For learners, Cambridge IGCSE helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It is the perfect springboard to advanced study.
There are over 70 subjects available at Cambridge IGCSE, including 30 languages, and schools can offer some of them in any combination. Cambridge IGCSE develops learner knowledge, understanding, and skills in:
Subject content
Applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as unfamiliar situations
Intellectual enquiry
Flexibility and responsiveness to change
Working and communicating in English
Influencing outcomes
Cultural awareness.
First Language: English, Arabic, Malay, Chinese.
Second Language: English.
Foreign Language: Arabic, Malay
Geography, Environmental Management, Economics, History,Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies, Sociology
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Management, Co-ordinated Sciences (Double Award)
Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Cambridge International Mathematics
Information & Communication Technology, Business Studies, Accounting, Computer Science
To take into account differing abilities, there is a choice between Core and Extended curriculum papers in some subjects.
The Core curriculum is within the ability range of a large majority of students. It provides a full overview of the subject and is targeted at students expected to achieve grades C to G.
The Extended curriculum has been designed for the more academically able. It is targeted at those expected to achieve grades A* to E.
IMPORTANT NOTE: THE MAXIMUM GRADE YOU CAN ATTAIN WITH THE CORE CURRICULUM IS C GRADE.
For IMAS students, all subjects taught in school, cover the extended curriculum. It is advised for IMAS students to register for the extended option. However, if you are in doubt, please ask your Teacher/Phase Leader/Cambridge Center @ IMAS Coordinator about it before registering.
Cambridge ICE is the group award of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and requires the study of a minimum of seven subjects drawn from the five different IGCSE subject groups.
Not only is the ICE diploma recognised as proof of outstanding academic accomplishment by higher education institutions and employers all over the world, but also required for enrolment procedures at many universities. It gives schools the opportunity to benefit from offering a broad and balanced curriculum by recognising the achievements of students who pass examinations in at least seven Cambridge IGCSE subjects from five different subject groups, including two different languages.
Learners must take a minimum of two different languages from Group I, and at least one subject from each of Groups II, III, IV and V. The seventh subject can be taken from any of the five subject groups.
Obtaining the ICE Award & its result
To qualify for Cambridge ICE Award, candidates must obtain at least Grade G(g) in each of the seven subjects from the subject groups listed above. In addition, only candidates who have taken at least six Cambridge IGCSE subjects will be awarded a Cambridge ICE certificate. Candidates who meet the requirements of the Cambridge ICE award will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction, which will be determined as follows:
Candidates who fail to gain Cambridge ICE will be awarded Cambridge IGCSE certificates showing the results in the individual subjects taken. The Cambridge ICE certificate will only show the level of award obtained and will not list the individual subjects contributing to the award.
Students can take any number of subjects. However, it is advised to take a minimum of 5 subjects from the IGCSE syllabus, as this is what most colleges and universities accept as a minimum requirement. The subjects must include Mathematics and English as those subjects are mandatory in most of the colleges and universities around the world that recognize the IGCSE syllabus.
You are however encouraged to take as many subjects as you can. Having more subjects in your record with good grades is more appealing to colleges/universities to accept a student and also will favor your application for any scholarships. Moreover and most importantly, it will enhance your time management ability and broaden your spectrum about different areas of the academic world.
However, Be Realistic, Do Not Overload! As tempting as it is to take around 8 or 10 IGCSE subjects, that decision should come from the student. There are several students who take up to 10 IGCSE subjects. They genuinely have the interest, confidence, time, and mechanisms to master all of them. Hence, they pass with flying colors. On the other hand, there are those who take up too many subjects due to peer pressure or overconfidence. As a result, they perform poorly as they are not able to give equal attention to all of them. Hence, it is always best to judge your capabilities and be true to yourself when choosing the IGCSE subjects. Remember to be realistic and not take up too many, and then risk not performing well in the examinations.
At Cambridge Center @ IMAS, we have had students who took a minimum of 5 subjects, however, the average number of subjects students take is 7. We also have had students who took up to 10 subjects in one session and managed to get exceptional results.
Other than the two mandatory subjects (Mathematics and English) by most colleges/universities in Malaysia (which might be different in other countries), students can take any subjects that meet their interests. It is advised that the students choose those subjects based on their future desired field of study. It is also important for students to have a simple plan or an idea of the type of degree they wish to study at an undergraduate degree level. Students can browse through universities' admission websites to have a look at the required subjects for their desired field of study.
For students who plan to study medicine, for example, having chemistry and biology in the selected subjects is crucial. Similarly, including physics, chemistry, and additional mathematics would be a great combination for students planning to take Engineering. For commerce and IT majors, students are advised to take subjects from group 5.
Although planning what subjects to take is important, IGCSE subjects do not determine the future educational plans of the student. You DO NOT have to pursue all the subjects chosen from the IGCSE syllabus at an undergraduate degree level.
The main purpose of ICE is that the student is introduced to a wide range of subjects. Some universities in the UK, Canada, and European Union Countries require the ICE award for admission, however, it is not required in Malaysia. If you are planning to study abroad, it is best to research if it is a requirement by your desired learning institution. If taking seven subjects is not an issue for you, you may consider taking the ICE award anyway.
In IMAS most students who take the science stream will opt for it as they already cover the seven subjects during their 2 years of study. A sample combination of:
English
Arabic or Malay
Islamiyat
Physics and/or Biology and/or Chemistry
Mathematics
ICT
will make you eligible for the award.
However, commerce stream students, need to take at least one science subject in order to be eligible for the ICE award.
In the end, it is really up to the ability of the student and their willingness to take a minimum of 7 subjects.
Note: you can also get the award if you take the seven subjects in two consecutive exam intakes (JUNE & NOVEMBER).
Before you register for the exams, make sure you have read & understood all the exam types that are offered and you have a clear idea of what subjects you are going to choose.
